ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಮೆರೆಡಿಥ್ ಅಲೆಕ್ಝಾಂಡರ ಎನ್ನುವ ಧೀರ, ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಶೀಲ ಮಹಿಳೆಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆಗಳು. ೨೦೧೨ರ ಲಂಡನ್ ಓಲಿಂಪಿಕ್ಸ್ ಸಸ್ಟೇನಿಬಿಲಿಟಿ ಕಮಿಟಿಗೆ ಇವರು ಇದೇ ಜನೇವರಿ ೨೬ರಂದು ರಾಜೀನಾಮೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಡಿಶಂಬರ ೧೯೮೪ರಲ್ಲಿ ಭೋಪಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಜರುಗಿದ ಘೋರ ದುರಂತಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ, ಅಮೇರಿಕಾದ ಯೂನಿಯನ್ ಕಾರ್ಬೈಡ ಕಂಪನಿಯ ಕೀಟನಾಶಕ ಕಾರಖಾನೆಯು ೨೦೦೧ರಲ್ಲಿ ಡೋವ್ ಕೆಮಿಕಲ್ ಕಂಪನಿಗೆ ಹಸ್ತಾಂತರಿತವಾಯಿತು. ಭೋಪಾಲದ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಮುಚಿತವಾದ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಇನ್ನೂ ದೊರೆತಿಲ್ಲ, ಯೂನಿಯನ್ ಕಾರ್ಬೈಡ ಕಂಪನಿಯ ಉಚ್ಚಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.
೨೦೧೨ರ ಲಂಡನ್ ಓಲಿಂಪಿಕ್ಸಿನ ಪ್ರಾಯೋಜಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಡೋವ್ ಕೆಮಿಕಲ್ ಕಂಪನಿಯೂ ಒಂದು. ಇದನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಭಟಿಸಿ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಮೆರೆಡಿಥ್ ಅಲೆಕ್ಝಾಂಡರರು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಹೇಳಿಕೆ ಹೀಗಿದೆ:
"I don't want to be party to a defence of Dow Chemicals, the company responsible for one of the worst corporate human rights violations in my generation. It is appalling that 27 years on, the site has still not been cleaned up and thousands upon thousands of people are still suffering. I believe people should be free to enjoy London 2012 without this toxic legacy on their conscience."

ಸುನಾಥಣ್ಣ.. ನಮ್ಮವರು ಮಾಡಲಾಗದ್ದನ್ನು ಆಕೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವಿಶ್ವದ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಇವರು ಖಂಡಿತಾ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಜೈ ಹೋ..ಮಾನವೀಯತೆ ಮೆರೆವವರು ಯಾವ ದೇಶದವರಾದರೇನು..? ಸೆಲ್ಯೂಟ್ ಹೊಡಿಯಲೇ ಬೇಕು.

ಡೊವ್ ರಾಸಾಯನಿಕ ಕಂಪನಿಯು "ಯೂನಿಯನ್ ಕಾರ್ಬೈಡ್" ನಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಲಾಭಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಭಾದ್ಯಸ್ತವಂತೆ, ಕರ್ಮಗಳಿಗಲ್ಲವಂತೆ! "ಆಪ್ಪನ ಆಸ್ತಿ-ದುಡ್ಡು ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಬೇಕು, ಸಾಲ/ಕರ್ಮ ಬೇಡ" ಎನ್ನುವುದೂ ಒಂದು ಮಾತಾ?!
ReplyDeleteಇಂಥಾ ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ಲಜ್ಜ ಲಾಬಿಯನ್ನು ವಿರೋಧಿಸಿ 'ಸುದ್ದಿಯಾಗುವಂತೆಯೇ' ಹೊರಬಂದ ಆಕೆಯ ಮನೋಬಲಕ್ಕೆ ದೊಡ್ಡಸಲಾಂ.

NCL scientists did not come either. Every one of them pulled out. We could not have a meeting on the scientific truth of Bhopal! This is one reason Rajiv Gandhi got upset. My friends, whose names I won’t mention now, were heads of agencies. When I was sitting with Rajiv Gandhi in a meeting, he asked if there was HCN in Bhopal or not. Nobody answered him. Neither yes or no. I told him that there seemed to have been some HCN according to my friend
Sriramachari, but he could never make a public statement. I feel ashamed because I was the President of the Indian National Science Academy, the obvious body to organize a science meeting. That was a tragedy of India as far as science is concerned. We must have scientific honesty and scientific integrity."

ReplyDeleteಸಿ.ಎನ್.ರಾವ ಅವರ ಹೇಳಿಕೆ ಹಾಗು ಅವರ ಲಿಂಕ್ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ತುಂಬ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು. ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿಯ ‘ಗಣ್ಯ’ರೂ ಸಹ ಎಂತಹ ಬೆನ್ನೆಲುವಿಲ್ಲದ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಎನ್ನುವದು ಇದರಿಂದ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ!
ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಅವರೊಬ್ಬ ದಿಟ್ಟ ಮಹಿಳೆ. ಡೋವ್ ಕಂಪನಿ ಬೋಪಾಲ ದುರಂತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬದ ಪಟ್ಟದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಗೊತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ಲ ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಅದರ ಬಳಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಮಾರಾಟ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿರೋಧಿಸಬೇಕು.

ReplyDeleteಭೋಪಾಲ ದುರಂತಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ ಕಂಪನಿಯ ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಳ್ಳದಿರಲು, ರಾಜೀವ ದೀಕ್ಷಿತ ಎನ್ನುವವರು ಅನೇಕ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಒಂದು ಆಂದೋಲನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಆಗಿನಿಂದ ನಾನು ಎವ್ಹರೆಡಿ ಬ್ಯಾಟರಿ ಸೆಲ್‍ಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟುಬಿಟ್ಟೆ. ಡೋವ್ ಕಂಪನಿಯ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟುಬಿಟ್ಟೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಡೊವ್ಹ್ ಕಂಫನುಯ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನೂ ಸಹ ಬಿಡುವೆನು. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸಂಕಲ್ಪಕ್ಕೆ ಶರಣು.
